People would kill for her body.

Raised in an elite foster center off the California coast, sixteen-year-old Tabitha’s been sculpted into a world-class athlete. Her trainers have told her she’ll need to be in top physical condition to be matched with a loving family, even though personal health has taken a backseat outside the training facility. While Tabitha swims laps and shaves seconds off her mile time, hoping to find a permanent home, the rest of the community takes pills produced by pharmaceutical giant PharmPerfect to erase their wrinkles, grow hair, and develop superhuman strength.

When Tabitha’s finally paired, instead of being taken to meet her new parents, she wakes up immobile on a hospital bed. Moments before she’s sliced open, a group of renegade teenagers rescues her, and she learns the real reason for her perfect health: PharmPerfect is using her foster program as a replacement factory for their pill-addicted clients’ failing organs. And her friends from the center, the only family she’s ever known, are next in line to be harvested.

Determined to save them, Tabitha joins forces with her rescuers, led by moody and mysterious Gavin Stiles. As they race to infiltrate the hospital and uncover the rest of PharmPerfect’s secrets, though, Tabitha finds herself with more questions than answers. Will trusting the enigmatic group of rebels lead her back to the slaughterhouse?

Cover Love

Long before I typed the final chapter for BODY PARTS, I imagined what the cover would look like. I might have even sketched out a few thoughts when I should have been writing.

I had big ideas. Lots of them. At first I envisioned something surgical—a blade with a drop of blood falling from the point, and then a body with dashed-lines depicting where the person would be cut open. Maybe there would be an organ on the cover. A heart would make a powerful statement, right?

My ideas didn’t really convey the story though. Blood and organs and slicing blades scream HORROR, not sci-fi. Luckily my publisher went in a more insightful direction, and I couldn’t be more pleased!

They created a simple yet striking design that truly captured the essence of the book. By putting the focus on Tabitha and not her parts, readers can connect and be drawn in. If you look closely at the cover, you’ll notice what looks like a tattoo of a barcode on the back of Tabitha’s neck. It symbolizes that she’s not looked at as person, but rather a product to be purchased. A commodity. It’s subtle, and yet it sends an extremely powerful message!

The background features vertical blue lines that mimic a larger, more prominent barcode. Paired with the vignetting of the imagery, the cover has a sci-fi/thriller look that really pops. I love the way the blue background contrasts with Tabitha’s red hair. Similarly, I love the fonts the publisher used to give the book that near-futuristic feel. However, the title font isn’t completely in the foreground. It intersects with Tabitha in a way I haven’t seen on other covers, fading behind her in some spots, even weaving underneath the strap of her tank top. It’s almost as if Tabitha is trying to break out from behind the words. It’s another element that I love about the cover, and I hope you do too!
